Overview

Enter the iconic Louvre Abu Dhabi, the first universal museum in the Arab World, which promotes and translates and the idea of intercultural understanding. This art lover’s paradise is one of the top cultural institutions on Saadiyat Island and showcases artwork with historical, cultural, and sociological value from antiquity to the modern period.

Since this renowned museum first opened its doors in Abu Dhabi, the city’s art culture has grown significantly and instilled a strong sense of pride in both locals and visitors.

An impressive 9200 square meters have been dedicated to the exhibition space, including both a Temporary Gallery and a Permanent Gallery. The Temporary Gallery includes loans from the Louvre, the Orsay, and the Center Pompidou.

The Louvre Museum showcases connections and exchanges between different civilizations, transcending geography, ethnicity, and time. The building itself is a masterwork of architecture created by Pritzker Prize-winning architect Jean Nouvel and houses numerous works of art for visitors to enjoy.

As well as being inspired by the rich architectural traditions of the region, the museum was also developed in response to its exceptional setting on Saadiyat Island, where the Arabian sky meets the beaches and waves of the Arabian Gulf, and by the subtle play of reflections. The Louvre Abu Dhabi, one of the seven modern wonders of the world, is not only the first global museum in the Arab world but also a potent representation of the aspirations of the UAE.

Taking inspiration from the cupola, a prominent feature of Arabic architecture, Nouvel’s dome is a complex geometric structure made up of 7,850 stars. The stars appear in eight different layers of different sizes and angles. As the sun passes by, the geometric pattern projects beautiful shadows onto the ground creating the rain of light pattern.
